My One Act Play!

Wednesday is laying down, stage right, hugging a pillow. Next to her sleeps Adam. An alarm sounds, and they both wake up with a start.

Wednesday: Ugh. Another wonderful day at school.
Adam: Tell me about it.

Wednesday does not respond to Adam, or even look at him.
She walks to stage left where her mother stands with a plate with breakfast foods on it.

Mother: Here are your eggs darling. Would you like something to drink?
Wednesday: No thanks.
Adam: at the same time No thanks, I don’t want anything.

Adam goes back into the bedroom (stage right) and puts on his jacket.
Wednesday shovels her food into her mouth and walks back stage right to put on her jacket.

Adam: to Wednesday Ready for school?
Wednesday: without acknowledging Adam; seemingly to herself Today’s going to suck.

Black out.

Lights up entire stage; Wednesday is standing with her friend Arizona. Adam is slightly behind Wednesday.

Arizona: excited, talking very fast and without pausing So I went to Jessica McClintock yesterday, right? And I think I found my dress! She squeals, while Wednesday tries to look happy for her, but the audience can tell that something is wrong It’s this gorgeous cherry red and it’s like tight up top with a sweetheart neckline and then it flares out like an empire waist but it has ruffles on the skirt and oh my god it’s just so– Arizona stops, finally seeing Wednesday’s expression. Come on Wednesday. Stop worrying. Tons of people get asked today.  Guys are lazy! It doesn’t matter to them when they ask as long as they have a date for the ticket deadline tomorrow. I bet you’ll be asked first period, maybe second at the latest.
Wednesday: Yeah, right.
Adam: peeping in from behind her I know you’ll be asked. You’re so pretty.

Wednesday scowls as the bell rings and her and Arizona walk offstage, with Adam trailing behind

Black out.

Lights up entire stage again; Wednesday is sitting cross legged on the floor, Adam is to one side of her, Arizona to the other.

Arizona: Okay so it hasn’t happened yet but I know it will happen in the next two periods it just has to like okay she points Cliff hasn’t asked anyone yet and he’s super cute but you know how shy he is he’s probably just building up the courage to ask you I mean any guy would die to go with you.
Wednesday puts her head in her hands.
Adam: I don’t understand why one of Arizona’s friends can’t take you.
Arizona: And okay I asked Brett like fifty million times if he could get one of his friends to ask you but he said they like all had dates except Keith and he has like some tournament for fooseball or whatever I don’t even know. But like you know me and Brett aren’t dating yet so I couldn’t really beg him or anything. But I really tried, Wednesday, I promise I did.
Adam: I don’t believe you tried at all.
Wednesday: lifting her head from her hands Thanks, Arizona. It means a lot to me. If I had other friends to bother about it I would but you know just as well as me that every other girl in our grade sucks.
Arizona: And not to mention most of the boys! It’s such a great thing Brett asked me when he did, I was really afraid Elliot would.
Wednesday looks at her increduously.
Arizona: Oh come off it you’ll be asked in the next two hours I guarantee it. Just you wait and see.
Wednesday: Somehow, I highly doubt that.

Black out.

Lights up on stage right. Wednesday is sitting on the floor, Adam is next to her.  The teacher is lecturing in front of them.

Mrs. Pencil: lecturing Structuralism.  It was an early school of psychology that used introspection, or looking inward, to explore the elemental structure of the human mind.  The simple cognitive functions. How many dimensions are there? How many dimensions do we live in?
Adam: Three.
Mrs. Pencil: We live in three, and we can perceive four.  But can anyone tell me how many dimensions there actually are?
Wednesday: under her breath A million.
Mrs. Pencil: smiling A little far off there, Wednesday. There are eleven dimensions.  All around us things are moving, like radio waves, and we can’t perceive them. How do you think cell phones work? An invisible string connecting the two phones? She laughs to herself. There are tons of waves coming off the microwave, off your laptops, your cell phones… We just can’t see them. More to herself than the class Fascinating, isn’t it?

Black out.

Lights up stage left. Wednesday is standing between Arizona and Adam but facing her whole body towards Arizona.

Wednesday: You were wrong.
Arizona: Okay school doesn’t officially end for another like five minutes or whatever and I bet someone’s going to come by your locker any minute and ask you with like a poster and balloons and flowers and it’s gonna be so cute and that’s why they waited so long so you wouldn’t have to carry it all around during the school day.
Arizona grabs out her phone and starts scrolling through.
Arizona: Oh man, it’s Brett. I gotta take this.
Wednesday nods glumly at her and Arizona walks onto stage right, into the dark. No spot follows her. Wednesday turns so her back isn’t completely towards Adam, but she still isn’t facing him entirely. She pulls out her phone and starts scrolling
Adam: clears throat Actually, Wednesday. About that…. Um. I was wondering– Well you know I think you’re really pretty– And we have a lot in common– And– Um– Well, I just– I was wondering if you wanted to go to prom with me?
Wednesday: muttering I can’t believe I actually believed Arizona. No one would ever go to prom with me. I’m surprised she even still hangs out with me. God.

Wednesday walks into stage right into the dark, leaving Adam standing alone. He looks confused and upset, then follows her.

Black out.

Lights up stage right. Wednesday and Adam are facing Mrs. Sentido.

Mrs. Sentido: So Angeline will be pretty self sufficient. You can just heat up some pasta from last night if she wants a snack. Feel free to try and play with her, but she’s pretty imaginative, so she keeps herself entertained. You can just sit at the counter and do homework. Just make sure she’s doing okay every few minutes. It’s just a business meeting so I’ll be back in an hour or so.
Wednesday: Sounds alright Mrs. Sentido.  Where is Angeline?
Angeline: walks onstage Wednesday! She gives Wednesday a big hug. Adam! She hugs him too. Mrs. Sentido and Wednesday share a look.
Mrs. Sentido: As I said, she has tons of imaginary friends and her dolls are downstairs, so she shouldn’t be any trouble at all. Confidentially to Wednesday She claims she has a sixth sense. Kids! Glances at her watch. Well I gotta run! See you soon. She kisses Angeline on the forehead. Be good, sweetie.
She exits
Wednesday: leans down to be face to face with Angeline Hey Angeline. How’s it going?
Angeline: holding onto Adam’s leg. It’s good. She tugs at Adam’s sleeve. Did you ask her?
Adam shakes his head yes, but Angeline senses that he is upset.
Angeline: shocked She didn’t say no?! Did she?
Adam nods his head again, forlornly.
Wednesday: While Adam’s nodding Who’re you talking to Angie?
Angeline: preoccupied with feeling the outer seam of Adam’s pants pocket Adam.
Wednesday: Who’s Adam?
Angeline: Looking her right in the eyes, accusatory He’s your best friend in the whole world and you didn’t even say yes to go to prom with him.
Wednesday: What’s that?
Angeline: Adam’s been with you for years. It’s about time you started noticing him.
Angeline looks from Wednesday’s face to Adam’s and Wednesday follows her eyes.

Lights out as Wednesday stares straight into Adam’s eyes.

THE END
